E-Way Bill Validity Calculator

An e-way bill is mandatory for moving goods worth more than β‚Ή50,000, and it is valid only for a limited period based on the distance the consignment has to travel. If goods are intercepted after expiry, Section 129 allows detention and a penalty of 200% of the tax. This calculator converts distance into validity days under Rule 138(10), gives you the precise expiry moment and the window in which an extension can be filed.

Validity rules

  • Normal cargo: one day for up to 200 km, plus one additional day for every further 200 km or part thereof
  • Over-dimensional cargo (ODC) and multimodal shipments involving ship: one day for up to 20 km, plus one day per additional 20 km or part
  • A "day" runs until midnight of the day following the day the e-way bill (Part B) was generated β€” so a bill generated at 10:30 on 16 October with one day's validity is good until 23:59 on 17 October
  • The distance is the PIN-to-PIN figure auto-calculated by the portal; the user may increase it by up to 10%

Worked example

Goods move from Sikar to Mumbai, roughly 1,150 km. 1,150 Γ· 200 = 5.75, rounded up to 6 days. Generated on 16 October at 10:30, the e-way bill expires at 23:59 on 22 October. If the consignment is a 15-metre transformer classified as ODC, validity becomes 1,150 Γ· 20 = 57.5 β†’ 58 days.

Extension

Under Rule 138(10) the transporter or generator can extend validity in exceptional circumstances β€” breakdown, accident, natural calamity, law-and-order issues, transhipment delays β€” but only within 8 hours before or 8 hours after expiry. The calculator shows this window so you can set a reminder. Extensions require the current vehicle number and remaining distance; the new validity is computed from the remaining distance.

When is an e-way bill not needed?

Consignment value up to β‚Ή50,000, movement by non-motorised conveyance, exempt goods listed in Rule 138(14), goods moved within 50 km for weighment, and intra-state movement in states that have notified higher thresholds (for example β‚Ή1 lakh for intra-state movement in Rajasthan for most goods) are exempt. Part B need not be filled when the distance between consignor and transporter is under 50 km within the same state.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a "day" counted for e-way bill validity?

Each day ends at midnight of the day following the generation date. The hours on the generation day are effectively free.

What counts as over-dimensional cargo?

Cargo that exceeds the dimensional limits prescribed in Rule 93 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 β€” typically very long, wide or tall single indivisible items.

Can an expired e-way bill be extended?

Only within 8 hours after expiry. Beyond that a fresh e-way bill must be generated, and goods found in transit meanwhile risk detention.

Does the validity change if I update Part B with a new vehicle?

No. Updating the vehicle does not reset validity; only an extension under Rule 138(10) does.
