VAT calculator with country presets

Value Added Tax is the consumption tax used in over 170 countries. Indian exporters, freelancers billing overseas clients, NRIs, students abroad and anyone buying from international websites regularly need to add VAT to a net price or pull it out of a gross price. This calculator ships with the standard rates for the UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, major EU members, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, South Africa, Japan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, plus a custom option.

Formulas

  • Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + rate ÷ 100); VAT = Net × rate ÷ 100
  • Extract VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); VAT = Gross − Net
  • VAT fraction = rate ÷ (100 + rate) — the share of a gross price that is tax (UK 20% → 1/6; UAE 5% → 1/21)

Worked example

A Jaipur handicraft exporter sells goods to a UK retailer who will pay £1,000 net. UK VAT at 20% adds £200, so the retailer's gross cost is £1,200. Conversely, if a UK invoice shows a VAT-inclusive total of £1,200, the net is £1,200 ÷ 1.2 = £1,000 and the VAT £200 — not £240 as a naive 20% deduction would suggest.

Standard rates included (update yearly)

UK 20% · UAE 5% · Saudi Arabia 15% · Oman 5% · Bahrain 10% · Germany 19% · France 20% · Italy 22% · Ireland 23% · Netherlands 21% · Sweden 25% · Switzerland 8.1% · Australia GST 10% · New Zealand GST 15% · Singapore GST 9% · Malaysia SST 8% · Canada federal GST 5% · South Africa 15% · Japan 10% · Nepal 13% · Bangladesh 15% · Sri Lanka 18%. Most countries also have reduced rates (UK 5% on energy, EU 5–10% on food and books) — type the reduced rate in the override box.

VAT and India

India replaced VAT, excise and service tax with GST on 1 July 2017. State VAT survives only on petrol, diesel, ATF, natural gas and alcoholic liquor, with rates set by each state (Rajasthan currently levies VAT on petrol at roughly 29–31% plus cess). For all other Indian transactions use the GST Calculator. Exports from India are zero-rated under GST; the VAT shown here is what your foreign customer pays in their own country, typically on import or on resale.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate VAT backwards from a gross price?

Divide the gross by (1 + rate). For UK 20%: gross ÷ 1.2 gives the net; the difference is VAT. Choose "Gross → extract VAT" in the tool.

What is the VAT rate in UAE and Saudi Arabia?

UAE 5% (since 2018); Saudi Arabia 15% (since July 2020). Oman is 5% and Bahrain 10%.

Is VAT still charged in India?

Only on petrol, diesel, ATF, natural gas and alcohol, by state governments. Everything else is under GST.

Does an Indian exporter charge VAT on exports?

No. Exports from India are zero-rated under GST. VAT or import GST is charged in the destination country, usually paid by the importer.
