Free GST Tax Invoice Generator
A tax invoice is the primary document under GST. Every registered supplier must issue one for taxable supplies of goods or services, and the buyer can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) only on the strength of a valid invoice. This tool builds a Rule 46 compliant invoice in your browser β fill the supplier and buyer details, add line items with HSN/SAC and GST rate, and download an A4 PDF or print directly. Your business details and logo are remembered on this device, so the next invoice takes under a minute.
What a valid GST invoice must contain
- Name, address and GSTIN of the supplier; a consecutive serial number (max 16 characters) unique for the financial year; date of issue.
- Name, address and GSTIN of the recipient (if registered) and the place of supply with state name and code for inter-state supplies.
- HSN code of goods or SAC of services (4 digits if turnover up to βΉ5 crore, 6 digits above that), description, quantity, unit, taxable value.
- Rate and amount of tax β CGST + SGST for intra-state, IGST for inter-state β and whether tax is payable on reverse charge.
- Total value, amount in words and signature or digital signature of the supplier.
How the tax is split
The generator compares your state with the buyer's state. Same state β the GST rate is split equally into CGST and SGST (18% becomes 9% + 9%). Different state β the full rate is charged as IGST. The invoice total is rounded to the nearest rupee and the round-off is shown separately, which is the accepted practice under Section 170 of the CGST Act.
Worked example
A Sikar trader sells 10 LED panels at βΉ2,500 each (HSN 9405, GST 18%) to a Jaipur buyer. Taxable value = 10 Γ 2,500 = βΉ25,000. Both parties are in Rajasthan, so CGST = βΉ2,250 and SGST = βΉ2,250. Invoice total = βΉ29,500. If the same goods went to a Delhi buyer, IGST of βΉ4,500 would apply instead β the total stays βΉ29,500 but the tax head changes, which matters for GSTR-1 reporting.
Who should use this
Small traders, freelancers, consultants, service providers and shop owners who need an occasional invoice without buying billing software. Businesses with turnover above βΉ5 crore must also generate an IRN through the e-invoice portal; this tool produces the base invoice you upload there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this invoice valid for claiming ITC?
Yes, provided the mandatory fields (GSTIN of both parties, HSN, tax breakup, serial number) are filled correctly and the supplier reports it in GSTR-1. The format follows Rule 46 of the CGST Rules.
When do I charge IGST instead of CGST and SGST?
When the place of supply is in a different state from the supplier's registration. The tool detects this from the state fields automatically.
Can I add a discount?
Yes. Enter it under Additional fields; it is shown as a separate line after tax. For a discount reflected in taxable value, reduce the item rate instead.
Does the invoice number reset every year?
It is good practice to start a new series each financial year, e.g. INV-2026-001. The number must not exceed 16 characters and must be unique.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser and is saved only in your device's local storage.
