Apne PiP Player

What's new

Every released version, newest first.

2.5.019 October 2026

  • Your usage, on the settings page: how long you have watched in the pop-up, the last seven days, and which features you use most. Counted on your own computer and shown only to you — no website, video title or note is any part of it, and you can clear it whenever you like.
  • Two switches under it, both off, that send the developer an anonymous count of which features get used, and a report when the extension’s own code breaks. They are the only thing in the extension that talks to a server, and turning them off again throws away whatever was waiting.
  • The privacy policy has been rewritten to say exactly what each switch sends, field by field, and what is never sent whichever way they are set: the sites you visit, video titles, subtitle text, your notes and your screenshots.

2.4.319 October 2026

  • Turning the webcam on no longer makes the pop-up open by itself. Chrome hands a tab automatic pop-out precisely when it looks like a call, which is what switching the camera on does — and the extension was then popping out the camera preview. The automatic pop-out now leaves a page alone while its camera or microphone is live, and never picks a camera or screen-capture preview on its own. Popping the camera out yourself, from the toolbar or Alt+P, works as before.
  • The website now shows a recording of the pop-up in use, taken from the extension itself.

2.4.219 October 2026

  • Fixed the pop-up going black and silent partway through on sites that show a disclaimer or an advert first. Those players do not reuse the video for the programme — they throw the first one away and build another — which left the pop-up holding a dead video while the page itself played on. The pop-up now notices and moves to the video the page started.
  • That, rather than copy protection, is what the black picture in 2.4.1 was. The offer to switch to Chrome’s own pop-up is still there for video that really is protected, but it is no longer the first answer.

2.4.119 October 2026

  • Added an offer to move the video to Chrome’s own pop-up when a site turns on copy protection partway through, and remembered that site for next time. (This was aimed at a black picture that turned out to have a different cause — see 2.4.2.)
  • The parts you always skip are now learned properly. An intro is skipped with three taps of the forward button, not one, and those taps are now treated as one skip rather than three separate ones.

2.4.019 October 2026

  • Move through a video a subtitle line at a time with Shift and the arrow keys, instead of guessing with ten-second jumps.
  • Press R to put the line being spoken on repeat until you have it — for a sentence you keep rewinding, or a language you are learning.
  • Show the page’s own captions and your own subtitle file at the same time, one above the other.
  • A transcript panel inside the pop-up: search it, and click any line to jump straight there.
  • Save your notes and the transcript together as one file, which is what a long lecture is actually for.
  • Several videos in one pop-up. Chrome allows one pop-up window at a time, so up to four videos now share it as a grid; tap a pane to give it the sound and the controls.
  • The parts you always skip are learned. Skip the same stretch on the same site three times and the pop-up asks whether to skip it from then on. Nothing is sent anywhere.
  • Volume is now remembered for each site, the way the speed already was.
  • In audio-only mode the screen no longer goes dark while you are listening.
  • The sleep timer has a new setting: stop when this video ends.
  • On sites that protect their video, Chrome’s own pop-up is used straight away instead of showing a black picture until you find the setting.
  • Fixed a pop-up that could open almost entirely off the edge of the screen.

2.3.019 October 2026

  • The pop-up carries on by itself. When a video ends it no longer sits there waiting: it hands that video back to the page, picks up the next one and keeps playing, down to the last video on the page. You open the pop-up once and leave it.
  • On a site that loads the next video itself, the pop-up simply keeps playing it, as before.
  • There is a switch for it in Settings, under Automatic, if you would rather it stopped at the end of each video.

2.2.019 October 2026

  • Picture controls in the pop-up: crop to fill, rotate in 90-degree steps, mirror, and sliders for brightness, contrast and colour.
  • Step one frame at a time with [ and ], for reading something off the screen.
  • Audio-only mode hides the picture and keeps the sound, for when you only want to listen.
  • Three pop-up sizes — small, medium and large — on one tap.
  • Sound controls: voice clarity for quiet dialogue, night mode to even out loud and soft passages, mono for one earphone, and a left-right balance slider.
  • Skip silence speeds up the quiet stretches and drops back to normal when the sound returns.
  • Load your own subtitle file: pick a .srt or .vtt, or drag it onto the pop-up. Nudge the timing earlier or later if it runs out of step.
  • Subtitle appearance in Settings — size, colour, background and whether they sit at the top or the bottom.
  • Per-site rules in Settings, in one table: a fixed speed, no hover bar, or pop out automatically, site by site.
  • Continue watching: the long videos you left part-way through, listed in Settings.
  • Back up every setting to a file and restore it on another computer.
  • Right-click any video and choose Pop this video out — handy when the hover bar is in the way.
  • The toolbar icon now shows the playback speed while the pop-up is open.
  • Apne Player reopens your last folder, shuffles and repeats a playlist, picks up subtitle files sitting next to the video, and can show the camera as a circle.
  • A shortcut to open Apne Player straight away.

2.1.219 October 2026

  • Fixed a duplicate control bar that appeared over the video inside the pop-up window. The pop-up already carries its own controls at the bottom; the page's hover bar was showing up there as well.

2.1.119 October 2026

  • The hover control bar now appears on sites that build their player as a web component. Until now it only showed on ordinary videos, and on those sites you had to know to press Alt+P.
  • Subtitles from a plain video's own subtitle track now render inside the pop-up, and the CC button turns them off. Previously this only worked on players that draw their own captions.
  • Global shortcuts now find a video embedded inside another page, instead of only looking at the outer page.
  • The video now returns to the page if the pop-up fails to open, rather than leaving an empty grey box behind.
  • The ON badge no longer stays stuck on the toolbar icon after you navigate the tab away.
  • Pressing the down arrow in the pop-up while muted keeps it silent instead of unmuting.
  • The picker highlights now follow the videos when you scroll.
  • Background timers now run only in frames that hold a long video, which is easier on the battery on pages full of embeds.

2.1.016 October 2026

  • The whole extension is now in English, and the language switch has gone with it.
  • Fixed the Apne Player message that stayed on screen over a playing video.
  • Clearer wording throughout the settings page and the pop-up tooltips.

2.0.022 September 2026

  • New full-control pop-up: progress bar, skip buttons, speed from 0.25x to 4x, volume to 300% and subtitles, all inside the window.
  • Timestamped notes, with a click to jump back and an export to text.
  • One-click screenshots, saved to Downloads/Apne PiP.
  • A-B loop and a sleep timer.
  • Global shortcuts that reach the video while another program is in front.
  • Automatic pop-out on tab switch, and a stop on sites that pause video when you look away.
  • Resume for long videos, and playback speed remembered per site.
  • Apne Player: local files and folders as a playlist, plus screen, window and camera capture.
  • A settings page for all of it, a picker for pages with several videos, and a per-site off switch.

1.0.022 September 2026

  • First release: pop a video out by hovering it, clicking the toolbar icon or pressing Alt+P.
  • Works across sites, including videos inside shadow DOM, and re-enables pop-out where a site had disabled it.
