Install and first run
About a minute. Works in Chrome and Edge, version 116 or newer.
From the Chrome Web Store
-
Open the store page
-
Add it, then pin it
Click Add to Chrome and confirm. Then open the puzzle-piece icon in the toolbar and pin Apne PiP Player, so the icon and its badge stay visible.
-
Try it on a video
Open any video and hover it. The control bar appears at the top; click Pop out. Or just press Alt P.
Pages you already had open need one reload before the hover bar shows up.
-
Make the shortcuts global
Go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts, find Apne PiP Player, and set the actions you want. Change each one's scope to Global so it reaches the video while you are working in another program.
Reading the badge
The toolbar icon tells you what happened, so nothing fails silently.
- ON
- A pop-up is running right now.
- NO
- No video was found on this page. Start the video first, then try again.
- !
- This page does not allow extensions at all. Chrome's own pages and the Web Store itself are the usual cases.
Worth setting on day one
- Pop-up type
- Leave it on full controls. Switch a troublesome site to the simple pop-up only if the picture comes through black.
- Skip distance
- Ten seconds suits most video. Thirty suits recorded meetings.
- Sites to leave alone
- Add any work portal where a floating bar would get in your way.
- Hover bar
- If you would rather have no bar at all, turn it off and keep using Alt P. Right-click the toolbar icon for the switch.
Something not behaving?
