Picture-in-picture not working? Work through this

Most picture-in-picture problems in Chrome come down to one of a few causes. Here they are, in the order worth trying.

Nothing happens on a page you already had open

Reload the page once. A tab that was open before the extension was installed or updated has not met it yet, so the hover bar and Alt P do nothing until the page is loaded again.

The toolbar badge says NO

That means no video was found on the page. Start the video playing first — until a site actually loads the video, there is nothing on the page to move into a window. Then try again.

The pop-up opens but the picture is black

The site protects its video with DRM — Netflix and Prime Video are the usual cases. A protected picture cannot be shown in the full-control window, so switch that site to Chrome's simple pop-up in Settings, or let the extension offer the switch when it detects the protection. You keep the picture; the extra controls are the part that is not possible on protected video.

The badge says !

The page does not allow extensions at all. Chrome's own settings pages and the Chrome Web Store itself are the common ones. There is nothing to fix; it is a browser rule.

A global shortcut does nothing

Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts, find Apne PiP Player, and check the shortcut's scope is set to Global rather than In Chrome. Also make sure no other program has claimed the same keys.

Chrome's own picture-in-picture is greyed out

On some sites the native button is disabled by the site itself. This extension re-enables pop-out where a site had switched it off, so if Chrome's own button is missing, the hover bar or Alt P will usually still work.

It still will not work

Check you are on Chrome or Edge version 116 or newer (the Document Picture-in-Picture window needs it), from chrome://settings/help. If the version is fine and none of the above helped, the support page lists the four lines that make a bug report quick to act on.
