Apne PiP Player

Watch two videos at once in Chrome

Chrome only lets one picture-in-picture window exist at a time, which seems to rule out watching two videos side by side. There is a way around it.

The one-window limit

Chrome's picture-in-picture is deliberately limited to a single floating window. Open a second one and the first closes. So the trick is not to open several windows — it is to put several videos inside the one window Chrome allows.

How the grid works

Apne PiP Player holds up to four videos in one floating window, laid out as a grid. Open the pop-up on the first video, then use the grid button to add others from the same page. One pane is active at a time: it has the sound and the controls, and tapping another pane hands the sound and controls to it. The others keep playing, muted, so nothing is talking over anything else.

What it is good for

  • Two camera angles of the same match or event.
  • A game beside its live commentary stream.
  • A video call beside a shared screen.
  • Two lectures or news streams you want to keep half an eye on.

Videos on different sites

The grid adds videos from the page the pop-up was opened on. To follow videos that live on different websites, open each in its own tab and keep an eye on the per-site automatic pop-out — or line the tabs up and pop the one you are focused on. For most people the four-in-one grid on a single page covers it.

Sound with several videos

Only the active pane plays sound, by design — four soundtracks at once is noise, not multitasking. Tap the pane you want to hear and the sound moves to it instantly, along with the speed, volume and subtitle controls.
