Amount Rounding Tool — GST Section 170 Rules
Paise create reconciliation noise: ledgers that differ by 0.49, e-invoices rejected for mismatched totals, and GSTR-3B figures that do not match the books. Section 170 of the CGST Act prescribes a single rounding rule for GST, and good invoicing practice is to apply the same rule to the invoice total and show the difference as a separate round-off line. This tool applies the statutory rule and several practical alternatives, and drafts the round-off journal entry.
The statutory rule (Sec 170, CGST Act 2017)
"The amount of tax, interest, penalty, fine or any other sum payable, and the amount of refund or any other sum due, shall be rounded off to the nearest rupee and, for this purpose, where such amount contains a part of a rupee consisting of paise, then, if such part is fifty paise or more, it shall be increased to one rupee and if such part is less than fifty paise it shall be ignored."
Worked example
- ₹11,823.49 → 49 paise < 50 → ₹11,823 (round-off −0.49, booked as expense)
- ₹11,823.50 → 50 paise → ₹11,824 (round-off +0.50, booked as income)
- Tax of ₹1,801.35 split CGST ₹900.675 / SGST ₹900.675 → each head rounded separately to ₹901, total ₹1,802
Where rounding applies
- GSTR-3B / challan: round the total of each tax head (CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST, Cess) for the period — not each invoice.
- Tax invoice: the law does not mandate rounding the invoice total, but rounding to the nearest rupee and disclosing "Round off" is universally accepted and required by many ERPs and e-invoice validations (tolerance ±1).
- Books: the rounding difference goes to a Round-off account — income when the invoice is rounded up, expense when rounded down.
Other options shown
Round down/up to the rupee, nearest ₹10 and ₹100 (useful for quotations, cash sales and petty cash), plus the adjustment amount for each so you can post it correctly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is rounding compulsory on a GST invoice?
Sec 170 mandates rounding of tax payable and refunds; invoice-total rounding is a convention, but when done it must follow the same 50-paise rule and be disclosed.
Do I round each invoice or the total tax?
For returns and payment, round the total tax per head for the period. Invoice-level rounding is only for presentation and should be adjusted through a round-off ledger.
Which ledger holds round-off differences?
Create "Round Off" under Indirect Income/Expense. Debit it when the invoice is rounded down, credit it when rounded up.
