Words to Number Converter
This is the reverse of the number-to-words tool. Paste or type an amount written in English words β from a cheque, agreement, tender document or legal deed β and the tool returns the exact digits, formatted in both Indian (12,34,567) and international (1,234,567) grouping, plus a lakh/crore abbreviation.
Supported words
- Units and tens: one to ninety-nine (including "fourty" and hyphenated forms like "twenty-five").
- Scales: hundred, thousand, lakh / lac, crore, arab, kharab, and million, billion, trillion.
- Currency words such as rupees, dollars, euros, pounds and "only" are ignored safely.
- Minor units after "and": "β¦ and Fifty Paise", "β¦ and 25 cents".
- Mixed digit-word input like "12 lakh 50 thousand" also works.
How parsing works
Words are read left to right. Small numbers accumulate into a running value; when a scale word appears, the running value is multiplied by that scale and added to the total. For example "Two Crore Fifty Lakh" β 2 Γ 1,00,00,000 + 50 Γ 1,00,000 = 2,50,00,000. "Three Million Four Hundred Thousand" β 3,000,000 + 400,000 = 3,400,000 (34,00,000 in Indian format).
Worked example
Input: Twelve Lakh Thirty Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty Seven Rupees and Fifty Paise Only
Output: 1234567.50 β Indian 12,34,567.50 Β· International 1,234,567.50 Β· 12.35 L
Built-in verification
The parsed amount is converted back into words beneath the results so you can confirm it matches what you typed. Any unrecognised word is flagged instead of being silently skipped β useful when checking cheque amounts against figures, verifying tender values, or digitising old handwritten ledgers.
Common pitfalls it handles
- "Hundred" after a scale word β "one lakh five hundred" is read as 1,00,500, not 1,05,00,000.
- Spelling variants such as "fourty", "lac" and hyphenated "ninety-nine".
- Currency names and "only" placed anywhere in the phrase.
- Negative amounts prefixed with "minus".
Use it alongside the Number to Words tool to cross-check both directions before signing a document.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it understand "lac" as well as "lakh"?
Yes β lakh, lac, lakhs and lacs are all treated as 1,00,000.
Can I mix Indian and international words?
Yes, "two crore three million" is computed correctly, and the tool reports the system as "Mixed".
What happens with a spelling mistake?
The tool shows an error listing the unrecognised word so you can correct it rather than returning a wrong figure.
