Picture-in-picture on YouTube, done properly

The quick way

With Apne PiP Player installed, open any YouTube video, hover it, and click Pop out on the bar that appears at the top — or just press Alt P. The video lifts into a floating window that stays on top of every other app, and keeps playing while you work in a spreadsheet, a document or another tab.

Why not just use Chrome's own button?

Chrome's native picture-in-picture works, but the window it gives you has play, pause and a seek bar and nothing else. On YouTube you also have to right-click the video twice, past YouTube's own menu, to reach it. The floating window from this extension instead carries the whole player with it:

• Speed from 0.25x to 4x, so a lecture goes faster and a tricky passage goes slower.
• Volume boost up to 300% for videos that were quiet when they were recorded.
• Subtitles drawn inside the window, where Chrome's own pop-up leaves them behind in the tab.
• A searchable transcript, so you can jump to the exact line you need.
• Timestamped notes and one-click screenshots.

Keep it playing when you switch tabs

YouTube normally pauses when you leave the tab. Turn on Pop out automatically in Settings and the video follows you into the floating window the moment you switch away, so it never stops. You can also set a per-site rule so it only does this on the sites you choose.

Watch two YouTube videos at once

Chrome allows one picture-in-picture window at a time. Apne PiP Player works around that by holding up to four videos in one window as a grid — handy for two camera angles of the same event, or a match beside its commentary. Tap a pane to give it the sound and the controls. There is a separate guide on that.

Does it download YouTube videos?

No. It plays the video that is already on the page in a floating window; it does not download anything and does not bypass any protection. It is not affiliated with YouTube.
